The Regulation on European Digital Identity puts citizens at the center

After the European Parliament confirmed the proposal for a Regulation (EU) of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 on the establishment of a framework for European digital identity on February 29, 2024, the Council of the EU also adopted the regulation on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. The final adoption of the regulation is expected in the coming weeks when it will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

According to Mathieu Michel, the State Secretary for Digitalization of Belgium, which currently holds the presidency of the Council of the EU, the adoption of the European regulation on digital identity is a milestone in the digital transformation of our society. Enabling citizens to have a unique and secure European digital wallet while maintaining full control over their personal data is a key step forward for the EU, which will set a global standard in the digital field and increase security in the use of online services. Furthermore, the regulation on European digital identity, by putting citizens at the center, contributes significantly to improving and simplifying access to online public services. Citizens should not bear administrative burdens resulting from complex institutional procedures.
